As far as stake outs go this one was pretty lame. I had even forgotten to bring the customary donuts. The only sugar hit was from the now empty can of coke I had drained within the first ten minutes of sitting outside Todd’s house.

Last night I had gone to bed and slept dreamlessly, at ease knowing that Seth was there watching over me.

At first it had felt odd, his eyes roaming over me, taking in all my little imperfections as I lay in my childish flannel P.J’s, but after I had stopped feeling self-conscious, Seth’s presence had been comforting, so much so that all the worry I had been harbouring vanished, allowing me my first real peaceful night’s sleep since the accident.

When I woke the next day he was still there, sitting silently beside my bed unmoving. I had asked him how he could stand being still and staying there all night. His answer was simple if not a little unsettling, to him once I had gone to sleep the time didn’t seem to matter, he wasn’t connected to it so he couldn’t sense the time passing.

He had left the room while I got dressed but accompanied me first to the hospital to get the stitches from my temple removed then onto school. I argued the point saying he didn’t have to but he had insisted. I wondered if the in-between place he went to when he wasn’t with me was more disturbing than he was willing to let on as he didn’t seem eager to go back there. Mind you, going to a dark, lifeless place didn’t seem fun to me either, so I let him tag along, saying it was for his benefit and not admitting how much I really needed his support for when I saw Matt.

The morning had past uneventfully. The nurses removed the stitches leaving a raw pink scar which made my self-esteem plummet even further, there were pop quizzes and full length essays to write, not to mention extra study for the upcoming exams.

By lunch time my nerves were shot. I had managed to evade Matt all morning but I knew there would be no hiding from him in the cafeteria. I could only hope he would leave me alone.

Unfortunately that didn’t happen. As Matt approached me Deena dutifully stood her ground.

“Back off you pig or I’ll shove my heel through your crotch,” she growled, her eyes flashing with pure hatred.

Matt stood back unwilling to cause a scene, though his eyes blazed into me as he continued trying to get my attention.

“Abby, please I need to explain.”

I tried to ignore him but it wasn’t easy as he loomed above me, I considered leaving but his mates blocked my only escape route.

“Stand your ground, Abby, don’t show him any weakness,” Seth’s voice whispered beside me.

`I looked at Seth, looked deeply into his perfectly proportioned face and saw the strength that he saw in me. Anyone watching me would have thought I was eyeing up the captain of the chess club but I didn’t care.
